How to Draw a Lewis Structure?

Choose a central atom. Begin your build by choosing a central atom and typing its element symbol. This will be the atom with the lowest electronegativity. Sometimes it’s hard to know which atom is the least electronegative, but you can use periodic table trends to help you out. Electronegativity typically increases as you move from left to right in the periodic table and decreases as you move from top to bottom in the periodic table. You can look at an electronegativity table, but be aware that because electronegativity is calculated, different tables may give you slightly different values. Once you have selected the central atom, write it down and connect the other atoms to it with a single bond. (You can change these bonds to double or triple bonds as you progress.)

Count the electrons. Lewis dot structures show the valence electrons for each atom. You don’t have to worry about the total number of electrons, just those in the outer shells.

The octet rule states that atoms with eight electrons in their outer shells are stable. This rule is valid until the 4th period, which is required to fill the outer orbitals with 18 electrons. Starting from period 6, it takes 32 electrons to fill the outer orbitals of electrons. However, most of the time when you are asked to draw a Lewis structure, you can stick to the octet rule.

Arrange electrons around atoms. Once you have determined how many electrons you will attract around each atom, you can start placing them in the structure. Start by placing a pair of dots for each valence electron pair. Once the lone pairs are in place, you can see that some atoms, especially the central atom, do not have a full octet of electrons. This indicates a double or possibly triple bond. Remember, it takes a pair of electrons to form a bond. Once the electrons are in place, put brackets around the entire structure. If the molecule has a charge, write it as a superscript in the upper right corner outside the square brackets.
