- Calculate the total valence electrons in the molecule
H 1s1 Valence electron (DE) 1 (2×1= 2 since there are 2 H atoms) O 1s2 2s22p4 Valence electron 6 VE = 6+2 = 8
- The number of electrons required for the molecule to obey the octet rule is found (OR).
The number of H atoms in the molecule is multiplied by 2. Other atoms are multiplied by a factor of 8.
OR = 2 x 2 (has 2 H atoms) + 8 x 1 (has 1 O atom) = 12
- The molecule has bonding electrons.
BE = 12 – 8 = 4
4 electrons will be used for bonding. This shows that there are 2 bonds in the molecule (each pair of electrons corresponds to a bond).
- There are non-bonding, that is, unshared electrons in the molecule (UE).
UE = VE – BE
UE = 8 – 4 = 4
- If there are H atoms in the structure, they are placed at the ends. Otherwise (+) positively charged ion is revealed. Bonds are placed first between molecules. If the increased bond remains in the structure, it is placed as a double bond next to the single bonds.
- Non-bonding electrons are placed around the atoms in such a way as to provide the octet. It should not be forgotten that the H atom has 2 electrons according to the octet rule, and the other atoms have 8 electrons. O atom has a total of 4 electrons from 2 bond electrons. It needs 4 electrons to complete the backward octet rule.

What is H2O?
H2O is the chemical formula of water. When writing ions and elements together in chemistry, first the symbol of the element and then the number.
H2 – 2 Hydrogen
O – Oxygen
According to this formula, water consists of two hydrogens and one oxygen.
What are the properties of H2O?
Water, like other liquid substances, has cohesive properties. Due to its structure, its molecules can stay together without dispersing. Water that does not contain any other solution or element is considered pure water. The most basic feature of pure water is that it is colorless and odorless. However, water exposed to excess carbohydrates can discolor and smell.
The boiling point of water is 100 degrees, while the freezing point is 0 degrees. Since about 60% of the human body is water, it is one of the most basic sources of life for human life.
What is H2O Common Name and Molecular Weight?
H2o is commonly known as water.
In chemistry, molecular weight is written as “moles”. To find the mole of water, the atomic mass of the elements that make up the water must be added up.
The atomic mass value of the element hydrogen, which makes up water, was calculated as 1.00784. The atomic mass of oxygen is 15,9994 u in total. Accordingly, the total mole value of water is 18.02 grams.
Water is an inorganic substance with a molecular structure of H2O, consisting of two hydrogen and one oxygen atoms. Ionically, it is defined as the bonding of a hydrogen ion (H+) to a hydroxide (OH-) ion.
The molecular structure of water is in the shape of a regular tetrahedron. There is an oxygen atom at the top of this geometric shape, two hydrogen atoms bonded to oxygen at the bottom two corners that are not adjacent to each other, and unshared electron pairs at the other two corners. The hydrogen atoms are attached to the oxygen atom at an angle of 104.5 degrees. This angle is called the bond angle.
The molecular structure of water is dipole. The electrical distribution around the molecule is not homogeneous. On the oxygen side of the structure, the electron density is high and it is in the negative charge (-) state. Similarly, on the hydrogen side, the electron distribution is relatively low and has a positive charge (+). In short, when the structure inside the molecule is examined, water has a molecular structure with a positive electric charge on one side and a negative charge on the other. However, when viewed from the outside, the molecular structure of water is electrically neutral.
