To write the NO2 Lewis Structure, we need to understand the formation of NO2.

Step 1 – Calculate the total valence electron of NO2-1

We need to find the total valence electrons to draw Lewis Structure for NO2-1.

Nitrogen atom has 5 valence electrons.

Oxygen atom has 6 valence electrons but there are 2 oxygen atoms in NO2-1 ion which means that there are 12 valence electrons in total coming from oxygen atoms.

-1 charge means that there is an extra electron.

Step 2 – Calculate the total electron pairs of NO2-1

Nitride Ion Lewis Structure

Nitride ion can be shown as NO2- or NO2-1. Because nitride receives an electron to become an ion. “-1” means that NO2 received 1 electron to become an ion. NO2 is formed by 2 oxygen atoms and 1 nitrogen atom. Nitrogen has higher valence than Oxygen atom which means that the center atom of Nitride Ion is Nitrogen. Whenever something burns in the air, Nitrogen oxides will be formed. The reason for this is that the air we breathe mainly consists of Nitrogen (78%) and Oxygen (21%), and these combine in the presence of energy (from burning materials) in the environment.

The most common nitrogen oxides (generally defined as NOx) are nitrogen oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Nitrous oxide (NO) is an odorless, colorless gas obtained by burning the fuel inside at high temperatures, for example automobiles and other road vehicles, heaters and cookers. When they come into contact with air, they immediately combine with oxygen to form nitrogen dioxide (NO2). It is a red-brown, non-flammable gas with a distinctive odour. It is highly toxic at significant concentrations, resulting in lung damage with severe delayed effects.
